Autoimmune System

Autoimmune diseases refer to conditions in which the immune system abnormally attacks the body\'s own tissues, leading to organ or systemic damage. They are characterized by chronic recurrent episodes and are associated with genetic factors (such as HLA genes) and a higher prevalence in women. The hallmark of these diseases is the abnormal activity of autoantibodies or sensitized lymphocytes, with a global prevalence of up to 3% of the population. Physiological autoimmunity includes various natural autoantibodies present in healthy individuals, whereas pathological autoimmune responses are related to the release of autoantigens, cross-reactive antigens, and genetic factors.
