Metabolic diseases are a general term for a group of diseases caused by metabolic problems, including diabetes, gout, and protein-energy malnutrition, and can be manifested as either metabolic disorders or hypermetabolic function. Congenital metabolic defects, such as globoid cell leukodystrophy (caused by a deficiency of β-galactocerebrosidase leading to poor myelin formation), are a subtype. In 2025, the National Major Science and Technology Project will include the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases as a research direction, allocating approximately 447 million yuan in central government funding and implementing two organizational models, \'competition-driven\' and \'challenge-led,\' to advance core technology research for chronic disease prevention and treatment.
