Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Clinically, body mass index (BMI) is commonly used to assess obesity. The Chinese Obesity Task Force and the Chinese Diabetes Society define a BMI <18.5 kg/m² as underweight, BMI 18.5–23.9 kg/m² as normal weight, BMI 24.0–27.9 kg/m² as overweight, and BMI >28.0 kg/m² as obese. Obesity has become a major public health issue in China. The prevalence and growth rate of overweight and obesity in China are the highest in the world, making it the country with the largest number of overweight and obese people globally.
